Biography Dr. Yubaraj Sangroula is the Executive Director of Kathmandu School of Law and President of the Asian Association of Law Professors (AALP). He is Senate Member of Purbanchal University, Nepal as well as member of the Academic Council of Mid-Western University, Nepal. He is also consultant to develop curriculum and has been instrumental in establishment of the law school under the Mid-Western University. He served as the Attorney General of Nepal in the year 2012 and also served as Convener (equivalent to State Minister) of the High Level Taskforce for Reforms of the Security Agencies of Nepal in 2009 followed by Advisor to the Ministry of Home Affairs. With these capacities he played a crucial role to strengthen the justice system of Nepal. He also worked as the Chairman of the Bar Council of Nepal and Member of the Execution Preparatory Committee for Formulation of the Crime Code and Criminal Procedure Code of Nepal, which have come into force from August 2018, thus changing the entire structure of the Criminal Justice System of Nepal. Dr. Sangroula served as a Lecturer, Faculty of Law, Tribhuvan University (T.U.), from 1987. In 1992, he pioneered to establish the Clinical Legal Education Program in Faculty of Law, T.U, which was the first of its kind in South Asia and was convener of the Committee of Jurisprudence in LLM Program at T.U. He resigned from the Law Faculty in 1998, and established Kathmandu School of Law which has been able to earn a reputation of one of the best legal education institutions in South Asia. For his outstanding contribution to popularize the Economic, Social and Development Rights, he had been awarded with the SAARC Law Scholar Award in 2012 by Society of Indian Law Firms, and Menon Institute of Law and Advocacy Training. In the year 2014 he was awarded with the honor of Grand Forum of the Best Jurists by Renmin University of China Law School for his presentation on International Law in Asia. In 2017, he was awarded with Nepal Education Leadership Award. He has been active in teaching and research in the field of jurisprudence, focusing on law and development. His book on 'Right to Have Rights' (2018) introduced by Prof. Ben Saul, Professor of Sydney University Law School and the Challis Chair of International Law is a landmark contribution to the innovative theory of development from rights perspective. His book 'South Asia and China Geo-economics' (2018) focusing on international relations with analysis of western leverage in Asian Politics particularly stressing on Nepal, China and India has been a bestseller in Nepal, which also focuses on economic development and nexus of law. He has authored 'Jurisprudence: The Philosophy of Law' which has been a text book in most universities in India and Nepal. This book also received the honor of the Best Law Book from Nepal Bar Council in 2012. He has also edited book titled 'Geo-strategic Challenges to Nepal's Foreign Policy and Way Forward' in the year 2015. Besides these, he has authored various books on human rights, international law and international relations. Dr. Sangroula teaches in several universities as visiting professor around South Asia and China. He is also visiting professor at the Lehsan Normal University, China since March, 2019. He was a visiting scholar in Georgetown Law Center in 1995, visiting professor in Renmin University of China in 2014 and 2016, visiting professor at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, India in 2014, and visiting professor at Mahidol University, Thailand in 2015. He has twice been research scholar at the Danish Institute of Human Rights, Copenhagen, Denmark. He launched the International Residential School on Economic, Social and Development Right in 2005, from which around 500 students from China, South Asia, and other parts of the world have graduated over the last 14 years. He is the current Chair of Kathmandu Dialogue at Kathmandu School of Law, a summer school where young professional and students from China and South Asia participate for building connectivity in the Himalayan Region. He is the Convener of the 'Himalayan BRI and Development Affairs Council, Nepal (Himalayan-BRI Council)' which is a public intellectual think tank for promoting cooperation collaboration and connectivity among intellectuals of the Himalayan Region based at Nepal. He has spoken on Belt and Road Initiative and its benefits in various countries including China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal over the last two years and is the leading expert on the subject in South Asia and China. He is also author of numerous articles and research papers on belt and road initiative in leading newspapers and journals in and around Nepal. He was born in 1959, in district of Panchthar, Nepal.
